Does NC Medicaid cover eye exams and glasses for children?
Yes! Children and young adults 20 years of age and younger are eligible for an eye exam and glasses under NC Medicaid and NC Health Choice. Also, if your child has a medical eye problem (i.e. pink eye, allergies, dry eye, etc.), NC Medicaid, and NC Health Choice will cover their medical eye visits too! This is a huge benefit because medical eye visits without insurance can be very costly.
Does NC Medicaid cover eye exams and glasses for adults?
Great news! Starting January 1st of 2019, NC Medicaid covers eye exams and glasses for adults.
If you're 21 years of age or older, and have NC Medicaid, you can also be seen by Medicaid eye care providers for medical eye exams. This includes conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, allergies, dry eye, pink eye, headaches, eye strain, and much more!

Will NC Medicaid replace broken frames?
NC Medicaid does not replace broken frames. Therefore, if you break your glasses before you're eligible for a new NC Medicaid eye exam, you'll have to replace them out of pocket. A good rule of thumb for children wearing glasses is, "If they're not on your face, they're in your case!"
Does NC Medicaid cover contact lenses?
NC Medicaid does not cover contact lens materials or evaluation fees. As a result, if you have NC Medicaid and want to wear contact lenses, this would be an out-of-pocket cost.
Fortunately for you, our office provides contact lens evaluations at a very economical price. Also, we carry only the safest contact lenses available, most of which will not break the bank to wear!
Does NC Medicaid cover LASIK eye surgery?
It probably comes as no surprise that NC Medicaid does not cover LASIK eye surgery. In fact, to my knowledge, there are not any vision or medical insurances out there that cover LASIK. Why? LASIK is considered an "elective or cosmetic surgery", like getting a nose job or liposuction. You can learn more about LASIK and PRK here!
Do I need my Medicaid card to be seen for an eye exam?
Yes! Based on NC Medicaid rules, we need an active (non-expired) Medicaid card on file to see you.
